Counterfeit Currency

The Central Bank of Belize has the sole right to issue notes and coins in Belize, and only such notes and coins issued by the Bank are legal tender in Belize. The Bank, therefore, is not legally obligated to honour counterfeit currency notes.

If you have counterfeit currency, submit it to the Police Department in your area.  It is a criminal offence to reproduce the Belize currency note with the intent to defraud. Persons found guilty of this offence shall, on conviction, be liable to imprisonment of up to 10 years.

The laws regarding the counterfeiting of Belize currency notes and coins are included in the Substantive Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2000, Chapter 101, Section 184 through 198, and can be viewed at www.belizelaw.org
