Career Story
What do you do?
I am an Economist in the Financial Stability Unit. I am responsible for the preparation of analytical reports on issues related to the financial system and to propose mitigation measures for identified threats. Additionally, I am responsible for the compilation of key metrics to proactively identify and monitor risks impacting the financial system.
What part of your work do you most enjoy?
I enjoy that my work is both challenging and meaningful. I am delighted with the technical work that, through extensive training provided to me, I can utilize data collected to have a bird’s eye view of the entire financial system. As new issues and risks emerge frequently, I am motivated to maximize my capability to play an important part in ensuring the financial system functions and performs for the benefit off all Belizeans.
What do you like about working here?
At the Central Bank, we are encouraged to demonstrate credibility and excellence in every aspect of work that we undertake. Especially, it is the cultivation of a high standard in not only the hard skills but also the soft skills. Although there is emphasis for us to be treated as human beings, it is an attitude where it is expected of oneself to produce quality work while upholding values such as integrity, respect, dependability, accountability, enthusiasm, and teamwork. Naturally, if we each do our part, it is an environment where it becomes easier to become better both in our personal and professional life.
Why did you want to work for us?
I had enjoyed my time in the private sector for a year after completing my graduate studies and I wanted to challenge myself in a more professional setting using my degree in economics. I foresaw that working at the Central Bank of Belize is not only a prestigious honour, but it allows rapid mastery of practical concepts in economics to those that seek it through the rigorous standards enforced on work produced. I believed it would allow me an environment to both test my capabilities professionally and provide a meaningful contribution to my country.
Tell us about your career at the Central Bank.
I joined the Central Bank of Belize in January 2017 in the position of economist within the Research Department and was later transferred laterally to the Financial Stability Unit. While I did not have prior experience in financial economics, I had practical knowledge through my degree in economics from Galen University that allowed for a quick adaptation to the work expected. Although I am in the same role as I started, I have contributed to the modernization of tools and methods for effective macroprudential supervision.
