Are damaged notes legal tender?
Notes and coins that are impaired, diminished in size (otherwise than by fair wear and tear), mutilated, lightened, defaced by stamping,
engraving, piercing, cutting or otherwise, are not legal tender.
Will the Central Bank replace damaged notes?
The Central Bank of Belize exchanges demonetized notes and other genuine Belize currency notes that are damaged or otherwise defective provided that:
- The condition of the note is not as a result of deliberate action but by fair wear and tear, and
- Notes are more than half of the original size with at least one serial number.
How do I get a replacement for a damaged bill?
Mutilated notes may be redeemed in person between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm, Monday through Friday, at the Central Bank of Belize. To redeem notes:
- Complete the Exchange of Mutilated, Demonetized and Counterfeit Notes information form
- Provide personal identification
- Provide a police record for partially burnt notes
